Paralympian

A Paralympian is an athlete who competes in the Paralympic Games, the major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities. Paralympians may participate in the Summer or Winter Paralympics, which are organized under the auspices of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and national sport federations. The term applies to competitors at the highest international level as well as athletes who have qualified for Paralympic events.

Competition is structured around sport-specific classification systems that group athletes by the type and extent of their impairment to ensure fair competition. Disabilities represented include physical impairments such as spinal cord injury or limb deficiency, visual impairments, and, in certain periods, intellectual impairments. Classifications are designed to minimize the impact of impairment on performance within each sport.

History and governance: The Paralympic movement has its roots in the 1948 Stoke Mandeville Games organized by Sir Ludwig Guttmann for World War II veterans. The first official Paralympic Games were held in 1960 in Rome. The International Paralympic Committee was established in 1989 to govern most Paralympic activities. Since then, the Paralympics have expanded to include numerous sports and participants from many countries. The Summer and Winter Games are typically held every four years, often in the same host city or country as the Olympic Games, with a schedule that alternates between the two editions.

Notable aspects: Paralympians have achieved prominence across a wide range of sports, including track and field, swimming, wheelchair basketball, alpine skiing, and more.
