PVC material refers to polyvinyl chloride, a widely used thermoplastic polymer. It is produced in rigid form (unplasticized PVC, or uPVC) and flexible form (plasticized PVC, or PVC-P), the latter by adding plasticizers. Stabilizers, colorants, fillers, and impact modifiers are commonly added to tailor properties.

PVC is processed by extrusion, calendaring, injection molding, and blow molding. Rigid PVC offers high strength, chemical resistance, and dimensional stability, useful for piping and profiles, while flexible PVC provides elasticity and good electrical insulation. The material can be formulated to balance rigidity, toughness, and fire performance for various applications.

Applications span construction (pipes, window and door profiles, flooring), electrical and electronics (cable insulation), medical devices, packaging film, and automotive components. Its combination of low cost, formability, and wide processing compatibility supports a broad range of products, from everyday consumables to technical components.

Environmental and health considerations: chlorine content means incineration can release toxic compounds such as dioxins; recycling is complicated by additives and plasticizers, and is more mature for rigid PVC than for flexible PVC. Recycling methods include mechanical recycling and, in some cases, feedstock or chemical recycling. Health issues are linked to vinyl chloride monomer exposure during manufacture, leading to regulatory emphasis on safer stabilizers, plasticizers, and processing controls.

Regulation and sustainability: many regions regulate PVC additives under frameworks such as REACH and RoHS, and there is ongoing industry effort to reduce environmental impact by using safer formulations and increasing recycled content. Lifecycle assessment and end-of-life management remain active areas for improvement.
