Offsetdrift

Offset drift is a parameter describing how the output offset of a signal chain changes over time and under varying conditions, particularly temperature and aging. In precision electronics, offset is the output voltage that would be present with a zero input. Drift refers to the change in that offset as environmental or temporal factors evolve, leading to a gradual loss of DC accuracy.

Causes of offset drift include temperature-dependent changes in transistor parameters, resistors with high temperature coefficients, bias and leakage currents, mechanical or packaging stress, and aging of components. Some devices exhibit larger drift due to material properties or process variations. To mitigate excessive drift, designers often use architectures and components engineered for low drift, such as chopper-stabilized or auto-zero amplifiers and low-TCR (temperature coefficient) resistors.

Measurement and specification typically express offset drift as part of the device’s offset voltage drift with temperature (for example, microvolts per degree Celsius) and long-term aging drift (per year). The total system offset drift combines device drift with environmental effects and any calibration errors. Calibrations can compensate for fixed offsets, but drift reoccurs as conditions change.

Mitigation strategies include selecting low-drift devices, employing temperature compensation, ensuring good PCB layout and shielding, using differential or four-wire sensing, stabilizing supply voltage, and applying automatic offset cancellation techniques. Regular calibration and controlled operating conditions further reduce the practical impact of offset drift.

Applications appear in precision instrumentation, sensor interfaces, instrumentation amplifiers, ADC front-ends, and any low-frequency or DC measurement system where small offsets can affect accuracy.
