NetzwerkController

NetzwerkController is a software component designed to centralize the control and management of a computer network. In modern networks it often serves as the control plane in software-defined networking (SDN) and network orchestration, separating decision making from the data-forwarding functions performed by network devices.

Core functions include device discovery and inventory, provisioning and configuration management, policy enforcement, and telemetry collection. A NetzwerkController typically offers northbound interfaces to applications and services (APIs, analytics) and southbound interfaces to network devices and services using standards such as OpenFlow, NETCONF/RESTCONF, SNMP, or vendor-specific protocols. It computes paths for traffic, enforces security and access policies, and automates changes across the network. It also supports automation workflows, templating, and role-based access control.

Architectures vary but commonly feature a centralized or distributed controller layer that communicates with data plane devices through southbound interfaces. High availability, clustering, and federated or hierarchical designs are used to improve reliability and scalability.

Common use cases include data center fabric management, enterprise campus networks, multi-site WAN orchestration, and Internet of Things (IoT) networks where centralized policy, visibility, and automation reduce manual operations and misconfiguration.
