Networkvehicles are motor vehicles equipped with communication hardware and software that enable data exchange among vehicles (V2V) and between vehicles and road infrastructure (V2I), forming dynamic, self-organizing networks on public roadways. The term is closely related to vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) and the broader concept of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV).

Core components include onboard units (OBUs) and various sensors, roadside units (RSUs) installed along transportation corridors, and connectivity to cloud or edge computing services. The communications stack may be based on IEEE 802.11p (part of the IEEE 1609 WAVE suite) or cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) using 4G/5G networks. Interoperability and security layers are also essential, with certificate-based authentication and privacy protections.

Key functions of networkvehicles encompass broadcasting safety messages that convey position, speed, and intended maneuvers; facilitating cooperative awareness and traffic information sharing; enabling cooperative collision avoidance and platooning; supporting dynamic routing, traffic management, and incident response; and providing remote diagnostics and over-the-air software updates.

Applications extend beyond safety to efficiency and user experience, including real-time traffic information, adaptive cruise control enhancements, fleet management, and infotainment services. The ecosystem relies on regional standards and regulatory frameworks to ensure interoperability and safety across manufacturers and operators.

Challenges include security and privacy risks, vulnerability to spoofing or jamming, latency and reliability requirements for safety-critical data, deployment costs, and varying regulatory environments. Ongoing research and pilot programs aim to improve reliability, scalability, and integration with autonomous driving and smart city infrastructure.
