In photography and film, naturalismile refers to techniques or practices aimed at capturing or directing expressions that appear genuine, rather than posed. This can involve working with natural lighting, candid moments, or performer training that reduces typical signs of deliberate posing. In psychology and affective computing, naturalismile may denote models that distinguish spontaneous smiles from social or polite smiles, and that aim to simulate or recognize authentic affect in avatars, chatbots, or virtual agents.

In computer graphics and AI, naturalismile describes algorithms and rendering methods that generate facial expressions aligning with realistic microexpressions and contextual cues. Proponents argue that such expressions improve perceived realism and social rapport in interactive systems, virtual reality, and digital avatars.
