Mastopathy

Mastopathy refers to a group of non-cancerous breast conditions characterized by changes in breast tissue, often involving the growth of benign (non-malignant) cells. These conditions are collectively known as benign breast disease or fibrocystic changes, and they are among the most common breast disorders affecting women, particularly those of reproductive age. Mastopathy encompasses a range of symptoms and tissue alterations, including the formation of cysts, fibrous tissue, or a combination of both.

The exact cause of mastopathy is not fully understood, but hormonal fluctuations—particularly those involving estrogen and progesterone—are believed to play a significant role. Factors such as age, genetics, diet, caffeine consumption, and oral contraceptive use may also contribute to its development. Symptoms often include breast pain or tenderness, lumpiness, swelling, or nipple discharge, though many women with mastopathy experience no noticeable signs.

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical examination, mammography, ultrasound, and sometimes a biopsy to rule out malignancy. While mastopathy itself is not considered precancerous, certain types, such as atypical hyperplasia, may carry a slightly higher risk of developing breast cancer in the future. Regular monitoring and follow-up are recommended for affected individuals.

Treatment focuses on symptom relief and management rather than curing the underlying condition. Lifestyle modifications, such as reducing caffeine intake, managing stress, and maintaining a balanced diet, may help alleviate discomfort. Hormonal therapies, such as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), may be prescribed in some cases. Surgical intervention, such as cyst aspiration or excision, is reserved for severe or symptomatic cases.
