Certification and maintenance of competency are overseen by professional boards and accreditation bodies. Safety standards, sterilization protocols, and evidence-based guidelines govern modern surgical care.

Historically, surgical techniques have evolved from rudimentary procedures to highly specialized and technologically advanced operations, driven by advances in anesthesia, antisepsis, imaging, and instrumentation. The term surgical thus denotes both the domain of surgery and the array of methods used to treat conditions through operative means.
