In everyday language, it is commonly used to describe basic knowledge or equipment, such as rudimentary mathematics or rudimentary tools, meaning simple instruments that perform essential functions but lack sophistication. In education, rudimentary skills are those taught at the most basic level, forming the groundwork for more advanced study.

In biology, a rudimentary or vestigial organ is one that has lost much of its ancestral function due to evolution. Classic examples cited in biology include the human coccyx (tailbone) and the appendix, though some organs retain minor roles in certain contexts or individuals. The term can also be used to describe underdeveloped structures in embryos or in species with simplified body plans.
