Machine vision refers to the automatic acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of visual information to perform tasks without human intervention. It is applied in industrial automation, robotics, quality control, and research, where repeatable, objective image-based decisions are required. A machine-vision system typically operates continuously or on demand, processing images from the real world to detect features, measure properties, or guide actions. The field focuses on reliable, high-speed, automated operation in controlled or semi-controlled environments.

Core components include imaging hardware (cameras, lenses, lighting), acquisition electronics, processors (embedded boards, PCs, or specialized vision controllers), and software that implements analysis and decision logic. A standard workflow in many systems follows a sequence: image acquisition, preprocessing (noise reduction, normalization), segmentation to identify regions of interest, feature extraction or pattern recognition, and a decision or control signal that drives downstream equipment. Calibration and synchronization are important for accurate measurements and multi-camera setups.

Techniques range from traditional image processing methods such as thresholding, edge detection, morphological analysis, and template matching to modern approaches based on machine learning and deep learning for object recognition, defect detection, and semantic segmentation. Three-dimensional vision is supported by stereo cameras, structured light, and time-of-flight sensors, enabling measurements of depth and shape. Industry standards and interoperability efforts—such as GenICam, GigE Vision, and Camera Link—facilitate integration of cameras, processors, and software from different vendors.

Common applications include inspection and gauging on production lines, barcode or text reading, part identification and sorting, robotic guidance for pick-and-place, and quality control across manufacturing, packaging, and logistics. Limitations include sensitivity to lighting and occlusions, calibration drift, varying surface properties, and the need for substantial domain-specific tuning and validation. The field has evolved from early, bespoke systems to modular, scalable platforms that leverage advances in AI, optics, and computing power.
