Linearachse

Linearachse (linear axis) is a mechanical subsystem that provides translational motion along a single straight axis. It is a fundamental element in many machines and automation systems, including CNC machine tools, 3D printers, robotic arms, and automated assembly lines, where precise linear positioning is required.

Most linear axes consist of a guide mechanism and a moving carriage. The guide rail or guideway supports the load and provides smooth, low-friction travel, while the carriage carries the payload. Motion is generated by a drive element such as a ball screw, a timing belt, or a rack-and-pinion, and is supported by bearings (ball, roller) with rolling elements that recirculate as the carriage moves. End supports and lubrication protect the components and determine service life.

Common variants include ball-screw driven axes, which offer high load capacity and precision; belt-driven axes, which enable faster travel and lower cost but typically lower stiffness; and air-bearing or magnetic-levitation axes used in very smooth motion applications.

Performance characteristics include travel length, load capacity, stiffness, straightness and angular deviation, and positioning accuracy. Repeatability and backlash are important; many designs incorporate preloaded bearings or anti-backlash nuts to reduce play. Control is provided by servo or stepper motors with feedback from encoders; some systems use linear encoders for direct position measurement.

Applications include subtractive manufacturing (CNC milling and turning), additive manufacturing (3D printing), automated assembly, inspection equipment, and laboratory instrumentation. Linear axes are often organized in multi-axis configurations (e.g., X, Y, Z) to define three-dimensional workspaces.

Design considerations include environmental conditions, contamination risk, lubrication management, misalignment, and maintenance. Selecting the appropriate axis involves balancing precision, speed, load, and cost.
