Hardware development, known in Finnish as laititeisto­kehitys, refers to the engineering and design of electronic devices and computing systems. It encompasses the complete lifecycle from conceptualization and architecture through component selection, prototyping, testing, and mass production. The discipline integrates electrical engineering, mechanical design, materials science, and software embedded systems to create functional and reliable hardware.

Early hardware development emerged alongside the invention of the transistor in the 1940s, which gave rise to integrated circuits, microprocessors, and the personal computer revolution. Over the decades, increasing miniaturization, higher performance demands, and global supply chain considerations have driven innovations such as advanced packaging, 3D ICs, and system‐on‑chip solutions.

Modern hardware development typically follows agile and rapid‑prototyping methodologies. Tools such as CAD for schematic capture, 3D modeling, and PCB layout, as well as simulation software for thermal and signal integrity analysis, support iterative design. Prototyping platforms—Raspberry Pi, Arduino, and FPGA boards—allow developers to validate designs before committing to manufacturing. Manufacturing processes include surface‑mount technology (SMT), ball‑grid array (BGA) packaging, and advanced lithography in semiconductor fabrication.

Key trends in recent years include the pursuit of quantum and neuromorphic computing, the rise of edge computing devices, and a growing emphasis on sustainability, exemplified by energy‑efficient designs and recyclable materials. Collaboration across academia, industry, and open‑source communities continues to accelerate innovation and democratize hardware creation.
