Lackning refers to the process of applying a transparent or semi-transparent coating to a surface, typically wood. This coating, often referred to as a lacquer, is a type of varnish that dries through evaporation of a solvent. Unlike oil-based finishes, lacquers harden quickly, forming a durable film that protects the underlying material.

The primary purpose of lackning is to enhance and preserve the natural beauty of wood. It provides a smooth, often glossy finish that highlights the grain and color of the wood. Beyond aesthetics, lacquer acts as a protective barrier against moisture, stains, and general wear and tear. Application methods for lackning can vary. Spraying is common for achieving a uniform and professional finish, especially on larger surfaces. Brushing or wiping can also be used, though achieving an even coat may require more skill. Multiple thin coats are generally preferred over a single thick application to ensure proper drying and a superior finish. The solvent used in lacquers, such as nitrocellulose or acrylics, evaporates relatively quickly, allowing for rapid drying times compared to other wood finishes. This quick drying property makes it suitable for production environments where efficiency is important. The final appearance of a lacquered surface can range from a matte to a high gloss, depending on the specific product and the number of coats applied.
