Kinti

Kinti is a genus of hummingbirds native to the Andes mountains of South America. The genus currently contains four recognized species: the violet-throated starfrontlet (Coeligena violivera), the royal starfrontlet (Coeligena regalis), the Andean emerald (Coeligena formosa), and the chestnut-breasted coronet (Boissonneaua matthei). These hummingbirds are characterized by their relatively large size, long, straight bills, and often iridescent plumage.

The starfrontlets are known for their distinctive forehead patches, which can be brightly colored and are often used in courtship displays. The Andean emerald, as its name suggests, exhibits striking emerald green coloration. The chestnut-breasted coronet, while also part of the broader group, is distinguished by its rufous-colored breast.

These birds inhabit a range of montane habitats, typically between 2,000 and 4,000 meters in elevation. They are often found in cloud forests, páramo grasslands, and steep, wooded slopes. Their diet consists primarily of nectar from flowers, which they collect using their long tongues while hovering. They also supplement their diet with small insects and spiders, especially during breeding season.

Breeding behavior varies among the species, but generally involves solitary males displaying to attract females. Females build nests, incubate eggs, and raise the young independently. The conservation status of Kinti species varies, with some facing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation due to agricultural expansion and deforestation in their Andean ranges. Ongoing research aims to better understand their ecology and inform conservation efforts.
