Emerald is a gemstone variety of the mineral beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18). The distinctive green color is caused by trace amounts of chromium and, to a lesser extent, vanadium. Emeralds range from bright green to bluish-green, with color saturation and tone heavily influencing value. They crystallize in the hexagonal system and are typically treated stones; their transparency can vary widely.

In terms of physical properties, emeralds have a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 and a refractive index around 1.57 to 1.58. They often exhibit characteristic inclusions, sometimes referred to as jardin, which can affect clarity but also help identify natural stones. High-quality emeralds are prized for vivid color and compelling saturation, and stones are commonly cut to maximize color yield, using faceting or cabochon shapes.

Formation and sources: emeralds form in metamorphic environments such as schists and marbles and in hydrothermal veins within pegmatites. Colombia has long been renowned for producing some of the most intensely colored emeralds, though important sources include Zambia, Brazil, Afghanistan, Madagascar, and other locations around the world. Treatments are common; oil or resin filling is used to improve clarity and stability, while some stones may be treated with other stabilizing substances. High-quality untreated stones are comparatively rarer and can command higher prices. Synthetic emeralds, produced by flux-growth or hydrothermal methods, closely resemble natural stones but are distinguished by laboratory testing.

Care and value: color, tone, clarity, cut, and carat weight determine value. Emeralds should be cleaned with warm soapy water and avoid ultrasonic cleaning or sudden temperature changes to protect the stone’s integrity.
