Keukenpod

Keukenpod is a compact, self-contained kitchen module designed for small living spaces. The name combines the Dutch keuken, meaning kitchen, with pod, indicating its standalone, pod-like form. The concept reflects urban housing needs for modular, space-efficient solutions in tiny homes, micro-apartments, and retrofit projects.

A typical keukenpod measures 1.2 to 2.0 meters in width and 0.8 to 1.5 meters in depth, depending on the model. It integrates essential functions: a compact refrigerator, induction cooktop, sink with draining area, countertop workspace, and built-in storage. Some models add a microwave, a dishwasher drawer, and a ventilation hood. Materials commonly include stainless steel for the sink and appliances, with laminate or wood-veneer cabinetry; modular, stackable components allow left- or right-handed configurations.

Pods are designed to connect to standard plumbing and electrical services and may require a vented hood and a drainage line; in multi-unit buildings a shared utility hub can simplify setup. Installation typically takes a few days to a few weeks, depending on retrofit needs. Pods can be rented or bought, with some models offered as freestanding, relocatable modules.

Environmental aspects and reception: Energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, and smart controls help minimize energy use. Critics note that the compact layout can limit cooking versatility and storage, making it harder to perform certain tasks without additional space or modular extensions.
