Ideutvikling refers to the systematic process of turning ideas into viable concepts, products, or services. It encompasses generating ideas, assessing their potential, developing the strongest options into concrete concepts, and testing or piloting them before broader implementation. The purpose is to create value by solving problems or meeting needs while considering user desirability, technical feasibility, and business viability.

The process typically comprises several stages. Idea generation aims for a broad pool of possibilities. Screening and prioritization follow to filter options according to predefined criteria such as feasibility, desirability, and potential impact. In concept development, selected ideas are elaborated into detailed concepts with defined features, target users, value proposition, and assumptions. Prototyping and testing involve creating representations or pilots to gather user feedback and performance data. Refinement and validation use the evidence collected to improve the concept, reduce risk, and decide whether to proceed to implementation. Implementation or commercialization may include pilot deployments, market testing, and the development of a business case or project plan.

Common methods and tools include brainstorming, design thinking, user-centered design, mind mapping, SCAMPER, and the Business Model Canvas. Customer research, interviews, personas, journey maps, and rapid prototyping support iterative refinement. Success factors include alignment with user needs, technical feasibility, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and clear governance and criteria for decision-making. Outputs can be concept notes, prototypes, pilots, and business cases that guide further development.
