Piloting is the act of operating a vehicle, especially an aircraft, by a trained person who assumes responsibility for the vehicle’s safe guidance. The term can also refer to testing or trialing a concept or service in a smaller, controlled setting, known as a pilot program or pilot project.

In aviation, piloting encompasses flight planning, pre-flight checks, navigation, communication with air traffic control, and management of aircraft systems during all phases of flight. The pilot is responsible for safety, regulatory compliance, and sound decision-making, including weather assessment, fuel management, and handling emergencies. Pilots follow flight rules such as visual flight rules (VFR) and instrument flight rules (IFR), depending on conditions and airspace. Training begins at a certified flight school, leading to licenses such as Private Pilot, and progresses to Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licenses, with minimum flight hours, examinations, and flight tests. Ongoing proficiency, medical fitness, and recurrent training are required to maintain qualifications.

Piloting also occurs in other domains. Maritime pilots guide ships through port approaches; drone pilots operate remotely or autonomously; test pilots evaluate prototype aircraft and systems during development. In all contexts, piloting relies on knowledge of navigation, aerodynamics or hydrodynamics, weather, communication, and decision making, as well as mastery of the vehicle’s instrumentation and automation.

Safety and regulation are central to piloting. Licensing and airworthiness standards are established by national and international authorities, and pilots must adhere to operating procedures, checklists, and continuous training to mitigate risk.
