Preflight is the process of performing readiness checks before an operation to identify and address issues that could affect safety, reliability, or quality. The term is used in several industries to denote a systematic review conducted prior to takeoff, launch, or production.

In aviation, a preflight inspection is performed by pilots and sometimes maintenance personnel before every flight. Checks commonly cover airworthiness, exterior condition of the aircraft, and functionality of critical systems such as controls, landing gear, hydraulics, and avionics. Fuel, oil, and other consumables are verified, weight and balance are reviewed, and the weather and flight plan are confirmed. The aim is to detect any faults, missing equipment, or procedural deviations that could compromise safety.

In spaceflight and rocket operations, preflight checks ensure vehicle readiness, payload safety, and ground support equipment. Evaluations include systems health, telemetry readiness, propellant loading status, and environmental controls. Crew and mission timelines are reviewed, and range safety and contingency plans are confirmed.

In printing and publishing, preflight (or preflighting) refers to verifying digital files before production. Tools check fonts and color spaces, embedded images and resolution, bleeds and margins, and page ordering. The goal is to prevent errors in printing, binding, or digital delivery and to ensure files conform to technical specifications.
