Houseplant

A houseplant is any plant grown indoors in living spaces such as homes, offices, or schools, primarily for aesthetic, decorative, or psychological benefits. Houseplants are typically cultivated in containers with potting mix and kept under indoor environmental conditions. They range from small trailing species to large freestanding trees.

Common categories include foliage plants kept for leaf shape and color (for example pothos, philodendron, spider plant, snake plant), flowering houseplants (such as African violet, peace lily, geranium), succulents and cacti, and tropicals like fig and monstera. Some people grow edible herbs indoors like basil or mint, often in kitchen areas.

Care basics: most houseplants require adequate light, with many thriving in bright, indirect light; others tolerate low light. Watering needs vary, but overwatering is a common problem. A general rule is to water when the top inch of soil feels dry, and ensure pots have drainage. Temperature typically ranges from 15-24°C (60-75°F) with moderate humidity. Use well-draining potting mix and repot every 1-3 years to refresh soil and provide room for growth.

Propagation through cuttings or division is common. Regular cleaning of leaves helps with photosynthesis. Monitor for pests such as spider mites, scale, or mealybugs; isolate new plants and treat infestations as needed. Some houseplants are toxic to pets or humans; keep poisonous species out of reach if there are children or animals.

Houseplants can contribute to interior aesthetics and may affect indoor climate by transpiration and, in some cases, modest pollutant removal in controlled settings, though effects are variable. They require ongoing attention and can be part of a broader indoor gardening hobby.
