Grafiikkayksiköt, often translated as graphics units or graphics processing units (GPUs), are specialized electronic circuits designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display device. They are responsible for rendering images, video, and animations on a computer screen. Modern GPUs are highly parallel processors, meaning they can perform many calculations simultaneously, making them ideal for graphics-intensive tasks such as gaming, video editing, and 3D modeling.

The development of graphics units began in the early days of personal computing, with early systems relying on the central processing unit (CPU) for all graphical operations. As the demand for more sophisticated graphics grew, dedicated graphics cards emerged. These cards housed specialized processors and dedicated memory, offloading the graphics workload from the CPU and significantly improving performance. Over time, these dedicated processors evolved into the powerful GPUs we see today, capable of handling complex visual effects and high-resolution displays.

The primary function of a graphics unit is to process and render graphics. This involves a series of steps, including vertex processing, rasterization, and fragment processing. Vertex processing deals with the geometric data of 3D objects, transforming their positions and orientations. Rasterization converts these geometric shapes into pixels on the screen. Fragment processing then determines the color and properties of each individual pixel. GPUs are also increasingly used for general-purpose computing tasks, a field known as general-purpose computing on GPUs (GPGPU), due to their parallel processing capabilities. This is applied in areas like scientific simulations, machine learning, and cryptocurrency mining.
