Gordiaanse is an adjective used in Dutch to describe things related to Gordius or the Gordian Knot, and more commonly to refer to a problem or situation that requires a bold, decisive solution rather than a gradual, step-by-step approach. The term stems from the myth of Gordius, a Phrygian king whose knot in the city of Gordium was said to be impossible to untie.

According to legend, an oracle proclaimed that the one who could untie the knot would become ruler of Asia. The knot gained fame through the exploits of Alexander the Great, who, instead of solving it by untangling the threads, cut it with his sword, thereby achieving a decisive, “Gordian knot” solution.

In modern usage, a Gordiaanse oplossing denotes a radical, effective approach to a complex problem, often bypassing procedural hurdles or lengthy reforms. It emphasizes decisive action and a willingness to employ unconventional means when standard methods are deemed insufficient.
