Complexities refer to the properties of systems that involve many interacting components whose collective behavior cannot be understood by examining parts in isolation. The plural form signals that different communities use the term with distinct meanings: systemic complexity concerns structure and dynamics of whole systems, while informational and computational notions focus on data, algorithms, and problem-solving processes. Across fields such as physics, biology, economics, and computer science, complexity often arises from nonlinearity, feedback, adaptation, and emergence.

In computational theory, complexity studies the resources required by algorithms. Time and space complexity are analyzed using Big O notation to compare efficiency under worst-case or average-case assumptions. Core notions include complexity classes such as P, NP, and NP-complete problems. These abstractions help distinguish algorithms that scale feasibly from those whose resources grow rapidly with input size.

Algorithmic information theory treats complexity as the length of the shortest description that reproduces a given object, a concept known as Kolmogorov complexity. This is distinct from, yet related to, Shannon information, which measures average uncertainty. Kolmogorov complexity is incomputable in general, but it provides a theoretical lens for understanding data compressibility and the limits of universal prediction.

Complexity science studies how simple rules and local interactions can yield rich global patterns, often through nonlinear dynamics, feedback loops, and network effects. It employs models such as cellular automata, agent-based simulations, and complex networks to explore emergence, resilience, and adaptation in systems ranging from ecosystems to financial markets and urban infrastructures.

Because complexity is context-dependent, no single measure suffices. The term invites debate about reductionism, prediction, and control, yet it remains a useful umbrella for describing systems whose behavior cannot be understood by component parts alone.
