GPS-based (Global Positioning System-based) refers to systems, services, or applications that determine position, velocity, or time primarily using signals from the Global Positioning System. It covers consumer devices, professional equipment, and infrastructure that rely on GPS data for navigation, timing, or tracking.

A typical GPS-based receiver collects signals from multiple satellites. Each satellite transmits a navigation message and a carrier signal. By measuring the travel time of the signals, the receiver obtains pseudorange measurements to at least four satellites; solving these equations yields a position fix and receiver clock error. To improve accuracy, receivers may apply corrections from augmentation systems such as WAAS, EGNOS, or DGPS, or use real-time kinematic (RTK) methods or precise point positioning (PPP).

Applications are diverse and include automotive navigation, maritime and aerial guidance, personal location services, surveying and mapping, agricultural guidance, and time synchronization for telecommunications and financial networks. GPS-based timing is critical for coordinating operations across power grids, data centers, and financial markets.

Limitations and challenges include dependence on an unobstructed sky view, with urban canyons or dense canopies degrading accuracy. Other factors are multipath errors, atmospheric delays, signal interference, jamming, spoofing, and privacy concerns. Device power consumption and management of lock-on times are practical considerations in mobile contexts.

In practice, GPS-based systems are often used in combination with other GNSS (such as GLONASS, Galileo, or BeiDou) and augmented by inertial sensors to improve reliability, continuity, and accuracy in challenging environments.
