Furet

Furet, the French term for the domesticated form of the European polecat (Mustela putorius furo), is a small carnivorous mammal in the mustelid family. In English, it is commonly known as the ferret. Domesticated ferrets were developed in Europe for hunting vermin and, in modern times, are kept as companion animals. They are valued for their curiosity and playfulness and can be trained for simple tasks.

Ferrets have elongated bodies with short legs, a flexible spine, and a short muzzle. Coat colors vary widely, including sable, albino, chocolate, and silver, with some individuals displaying facial markings such as a mask. Adults are generally under 2 kg in weight and are known for high energy and long periods of activity followed by rest.

Care and housing: Ferrets require daily exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction. They are obligate carnivores and need a high-protein, high-fat diet, typically provided via specially formulated ferret foods or nutritious raw meat. Fresh water should be available at all times. They commonly live for 6–10 years.

Reproduction and health: Breeding occurs seasonally. Gestation lasts about 41–42 days, with litters ranging from 2 to 12 kits. Common health issues include adrenal disease, insulinoma, and vaccination-preventable diseases such as canine distemper. Regular veterinary care, vaccinations where appropriate, and spaying/neutering are recommended. Ferrets are legal as pets in many regions but may require permits or restrictions in others.
