Spaying and neutering are surgical procedures performed on domestic animals to render them incapable of reproduction. Spaying, also known as ovariohysterectomy or ovariectomy, refers to the removal of a female animal's ovaries and uterus. Neutering, or castration, is the removal of the testicles from a male animal. These procedures are widely recommended by veterinarians and animal welfare organizations as a means of controlling pet overpopulation and for their potential health benefits.

The primary benefit of spaying and neutering is the prevention of unwanted litters. Millions of stray and abandoned animals end up in shelters each year, and spaying and neutering at a population level significantly reduces this number. Beyond population control, these procedures can improve an animal's health and longevity. For females, spaying eliminates the risk of uterine infections (pyometra) and mammary tumors, which are often malignant. Neutering males eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and can reduce the incidence of prostate problems.

Behavioral benefits are also associated with spaying and neutering. Spayed females will no longer experience heat cycles, which can involve vocalization and attracting males. Neutered males are less likely to roam in search of mates, reducing the risk of getting lost or injured. They may also exhibit less aggression and marking behavior. The surgery is typically performed when animals are young, often between six months and a year old, though the timing can vary depending on the species and breed. Post-operative care usually involves rest and monitoring for signs of infection.
