The imagery tends to convey tension and sensory overload through crowded or claustrophobic compositions, abrupt cropping, high contrast, vivid color or grain, and motion blur. Subjects often include workers in busy spaces, commuters in transit hubs, crowds, and scenes of surveillance or control, with narratives that focus on anxiety, burnout, and resilience. Photographers combine documentary or street photography approaches with post-processing to evoke unease, using wide-angle perspectives, diagonal lines, and dynamic framing to imply pace and stress.

Fotostresy sits within post-2000s urban imagery and broader conversations about mental health and work pressure. Critics warn it can verge on sensationalism or voyeurism, while supporters see it as a tool to reveal structural pressures and social critique. The term is primarily used in Polish-language discourse and is sometimes translated in international criticism as "photo stress."
