Celebrating is the act of acknowledging and expressing joy, gratitude, or reverence for a person, event, achievement, or idea through organized activities such as ceremonies, feasts, songs, dances, and gift-giving. The term derives from Latin celebrare, meaning to honor or acclaim, and has been used in various languages to denote communal rites.

Celebrations are a universal human practice, yet they vary widely across cultures and history. They may be religious or secular, personal or collective, and are often tied to calendars, rites of passage, or life milestones. They serve social and psychological functions, reinforcing group identity, shared values, and social bonds, while providing occasions for reflection, meaning-making, and emotional expression.

Common forms include rituals, processions, feasts, music, dance, decoration, gift exchange, and public or private ceremonies. They can be anchored to seasonal cycles, historical commemorations, or life events such as birth, marriage, or death. In many societies, celebrations are embedded in public institutions and commercial economies, with festivals drawing participants from beyond local communities.
