FTasten

FTasten, often written as F-Tasten in German-language contexts, refers to the function keys on a computer keyboard, specifically the keys labeled F1 through F12. These keys are positioned on the top row of most keyboards and are designed to provide quick access to commands and context-specific actions within software and operating systems.

History and role

Function keys were introduced with early personal computer keyboards in the 1980s. Their primary purpose is to offer convenient shortcuts for commonly used operations, such as help systems (F1), renaming files (F2), refreshing a view (F5), or toggling full screen (often F11) in various applications. Over time, individual programs and operating systems assigned different default actions to these keys, leading to a wide range of context-dependent functionality.

Layout and variants

On standard full-size keyboards, FTasten consist of F1 through F12. Some extended keyboards include F13 through F24 for specialized professional use. Laptop keyboards frequently require pressing an additional Fn key to access the traditional F-key functions, effectively turning the top row into a set of secondary actions for system controls like brightness and volume. In some devices, the function key behavior can be customized or swapped via firmware or companion software.

Usage and customization

FTasten are widely used to speed up workflows, with many applications providing keyboard shortcuts that begin with F1–F12. Operating systems also map certain actions to these keys, and users can often rebind them or assign macros using software utilities. In gaming keyboards, FTasten may be programmable to execute complex sequences or macros.
