The concept refers to a small, often unnoticed, dot or mark that appears in older printed materials, particularly in books and manuscripts from the 15th to 18th centuries. These dots were frequently used as punctuation marks, particularly to indicate abbreviations or to separate words in running text.

In medieval and early modern manuscripts, punctuation was not standardized, and dots played a crucial role in clarifying text. Eldpunkte were commonly placed above or below the line of text, sometimes in pairs or triplets, to indicate abbreviations such as "et" (and), "per" (by), or "vs." (versus). The term *Eldpunkt* is also associated with the *Eldpunkt-Setzmaschine*, a mechanical typesetting machine developed in the early 20th century by the German printer and inventor Hermann Berghoff. This device was designed to replicate the punctuation and typographic styles of early printed books, particularly those from the Renaissance period. The Eldpunkt-Setzmaschine used movable metal type with small dots and other decorative elements to achieve an authentic historical appearance, making it a valuable tool for reproducing facsimiles of old texts.
