Earchitectuur

Earchitectuur, often written e-architectuur, is a term used in Dutch-speaking contexts to describe the design and study of architectural space in relation to electronic media, digital networks, and computational systems. It encompasses how buildings and urban environments integrate sensors, actuators, information displays, and interactive technologies to influence behavior, performance, and experience.

Scope and applications: The field covers smart buildings, responsive or kinetic architecture, digital façades, and media-rich public spaces. It engages information architecture within built forms—how data flows through spaces, how users interface with controls, and how software and hardware are coordinated with structure and aesthetics. It also addresses urban-scale deployments such as plaza installations, wayfinding systems, and networked street furniture.

Origins and discourse: Earchitectuur emerged alongside advances in information technology and digital media in the late 20th century and has since evolved with the rise of the Internet of Things, data visualization, and interactive media. It draws on architecture, information design, human–computer interaction, media art, and cybernetics to explore the boundary between physical space and digital content.
