The measurement principle typically involves sensing the deflection or change in a sensing element caused by the pressure difference. Common technologies include piezoresistive silicon diaphragms, capacitive sensors, quartz resonators, and optical methods. Output formats vary and may be analog voltage (for example 0-5 V), current (4-20 mA), or digital signals (I2C, SPI). Ranges span from a few pascals to hundreds of kilopascals, with accuracies commonly in the sub-percent to low-percent of span and temperature compensation to reduce drift.

Applications are widespread in process control and industrial automation. They are used to monitor pressure drops across filters and ducts in HVAC systems, to measure flow via differential pressure across orifices or vents, in cleanrooms and pharmaceutical facilities, and in medical, automotive, and aerospace equipment. They also serve as core components in level and leak-detection systems.

Installation and considerations include selecting the correct port orientation, ensuring compatibility of wetted materials with the process fluid, and providing isolation from vibration and rapid temperature changes. Calibration and periodic verification are important for maintaining accuracy. Some models offer protection for hazardous environments (ATEX/IECEx) or ingress protection ratings (IP), and proper mounting reduces calibration drift and mechanical stress.
