Resonators are devices or structures in which energy is stored so that the system tends to oscillate at particular frequencies, known as resonant frequencies. When driven near resonance, energy exchanges between different forms—such as kinetic and potential energy in mechanical systems or electric and magnetic energy in electrical systems—producing larger oscillations with relatively small inputs. The sharpness of the response is described by the quality factor, or Q, with higher Q indicating slower energy loss and narrower resonance.

Resonators occur in many domains. Mechanical or acoustic resonators include tuning forks, strings, membranes, and air-columns; electrical RF and microwave resonators include LC circuits, quartz crystal resonators, and dielectric resonators; optical resonators include Fabry-Pérot cavities, ring resonators, and photonic crystal cavities. Each type supports discrete modes whose frequencies depend on geometry, materials, and boundary conditions.

Optical resonators provide feedback and mode selection in lasers and enable precise sensing. RF and microwave resonators serve as filters, oscillators, and impedance-matching elements. Acoustic resonators shape instrument tones and influence room acoustics. Quartz crystal resonators offer exceptionally stable frequencies for timekeeping and signaling, while MEMS and dielectric resonators enable compact, high-Q components in modern communications.

Design considerations include selecting a target resonant frequency, achieving the desired bandwidth (and thus Q), controlling losses, and ensuring stable operation under environmental changes. Coupling to external circuits or waveguides determines loading and tunability. Because resonance is sensitive to dimensions, materials, and temperature, precision fabrication and compensation techniques are often required for long-term stability.
