Resonant is a term used to describe systems, processes, or responses that exhibit resonance: a strong amplification at particular frequencies corresponding to the system’s natural modes of oscillation. When a periodic external force matches a natural frequency, energy transfer is especially efficient, and the system oscillates with large amplitude. The precise frequency and the strength of the response depend on the system’s parameters and damping.

In mechanical and acoustic contexts, natural frequencies arise from mass and stiffness. A swinging pendulum, a vibrating string, or a room or musical instrument cavity can resonate. Helmholtz resonators and organ pipes are classic acoustic resonators, producing loud, pure tones.

In electrical engineering, resonant circuits—series or parallel RLC circuits—occur at ω0 = 1/√(LC) (ignoring damping). At resonance, impedance is minimized (series) or maximized (parallel), enabling tuning and filtering. The term “resonant frequency” is common in radios, sensors, MEMS devices, and spectroscopy. The quality factor Q characterizes the sharpness of the resonance.

In chemistry and physics, resonance describes systems where energy is distributed over multiple modes; in chemistry, resonance refers to delocalized electrons across several contributing structures, producing “resonant structures” that cannot be captured by a single Lewis structure. In optics, optical cavities and plasmonic resonators exhibit resonant enhancement.

While resonance enables useful amplification, it can also be hazardous if external forcing raises amplitudes to damaging levels, as in bridges or machinery; careful design and damping are used to control resonant effects.
