Oscillates is the verb form of oscillate, meaning to move or swing back and forth between two states or positions. In physics and engineering, oscillation refers to a repetitive variation around an equilibrium point, often taking on a regular, periodic pattern.

A common model is simple harmonic motion, where a restoring force is proportional to displacement and directed toward equilibrium. This produces sinusoidal motion, described by x(t) = A cos(ωt + φ). The amplitude A is the maximum displacement, the period T is the time for one complete cycle, the frequency f = 1/T, and the angular frequency ω = 2πf.

In real systems, damping removes energy, causing oscillations to decrease in amplitude over time. Depending on damping, motion is classified as underdamped, critically damped, or overdamped. If an external periodic force sustains the motion, the system exhibits driven oscillations; resonance occurs when the forcing frequency matches the natural frequency, potentially amplifying the response.

Typical examples include a swinging pendulum for small angles, a mass on a spring, and an LC electrical circuit. Oscillations have wide-ranging applications in clocks, sensors, radio receivers, and engineering analyses of vibrations and stability.

Outside physics, oscillatory behavior appears in biology (heartbeat and neural activity), economics (business cycles), and environmental systems. Across domains, oscillations are characterized by parameters such as amplitude, period, frequency, and phase relative to a reference signal.
