Oscillate means to move or be arranged in a manner that repeats oscillatory motion, typically around an equilibrium position. It describes periodic back-and-forth motion seen in physical systems such as a swinging pendulum, a mass on a spring, or a vibrating guitar string. In many contexts, oscillation refers to any repetitive variation about a central value, including electrical signals that alternate in time.

In mathematics, simple harmonic motion is a common model for oscillation. The displacement as a function of time is x(t) = A cos(ωt + φ), where A is amplitude, ω is angular frequency, and φ is phase. The ordinary frequency is f = ω/(2π) and the period is T = 1/f = 2π/ω. Energy in ideal SHM continuously transfers between kinetic and potential forms, with total energy constant.

Real systems often involve damping, where a nonconservative force removes energy and the amplitude decays over time. If an external periodic force acts on the system, driven oscillations can occur; when the driving frequency approaches the natural frequency, resonance leads to large amplitudes.

Oscillations appear in mechanical, electrical, optical, and biological contexts. Electrical circuits with inductors, capacitors, and resistors (RLC circuits) produce oscillations, as do resonators in lasers and magnets. Understanding oscillations aids in timekeeping, signal processing, sensing, and the study of stability in dynamical systems.
