The Deutsch Drahthaar, abbreviated DD, is a German versatile hunting dog bred to be a multi-purpose hunter capable of tracking, pointing, and retrieving game on land and in water. It was developed in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by breeders associated with the Verein Deutsch-Drahthaar (VDD), who sought a rugged, self-reliant dog suited for varied terrain and weather conditions.

Appearance and traits: The DD is a medium-to-large, muscular dog with a dense wiry coat designed to protect it from brush and cold. Coat color is typically liver and white in various patterns. Dogs stand roughly 60–66 cm at the withers for males and are slightly smaller for females, with a weight around 25–35 kg. Distinctive facial furnishings such as eyebrows and a mustache help protect the eyes in scrubby environments.

Character and work: Deutsch Drahthaars are intelligent, independent, and highly trainable with consistent, experienced handling. They excel in tracking, pointing, and retrieving across varied terrains and water, and are known for stamina and adaptability. They require regular, vigorous exercise and ongoing training from an experienced owner. They tend to form strong bonds with their families and typically do well in active households with time for exercise and mental stimulation.

Care and health: The wiry coat requires periodic grooming and sometimes stripping or trimming. Regular brushing, nail care, and dental care are recommended. Health concerns can include hip and elbow dysplasia and certain eye conditions; with good care, life expectancy is commonly around 12–14 years.

Recognition: The Deutsch Drahthaar is primarily maintained by the VDD breed registry. Recognition by major kennel clubs varies by country; in many regions it is treated as a specialty or hunting breed rather than a widely registered AKC/FCI breed.
