Depressionsor, literally “causes of depression,” is a term used to describe the range of factors that can contribute to the development of depressive disorders. Most depression cases are multifactorial, arising from an interaction of biological, psychological, and social influences rather than a single cause.

Biological factors include genetic vulnerability, family history of mood disorders, and neurochemical changes in brain circuits involved in mood regulation. Hormonal fluctuations (such as postpartum periods or thyroid conditions), medical illnesses, and certain medications or substances can also influence risk.

Psychological factors encompass past trauma or chronic stress, negative thinking patterns, and maladaptive coping strategies. Personality traits like high levels of self-criticism or low resilience may increase susceptibility, particularly after adverse events.

Environmental and social factors involve ongoing life stressors, such as unemployment, poverty, relationship problems, social isolation, and lack of social support. Cultural expectations and stigma can also affect recognition, reporting, and treatment seeking.

Medical and substance-related contributors include chronic pain, autoimmune or endocrine disorders, sleep disorders, and the use of alcohol or illicit drugs. Substance use can both trigger depression and worsen its course, creating a cycle of symptoms.
