Personality refers to the enduring patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that distinguish individuals and persist across time and situations. It encompasses stable differences in cognition, emotion, motivation, and social interaction. The study of personality aims to describe, explain, and predict behavior, distinguishing trait-like dispositions from transient states. A prominent approach classifies personality into traits; the Big Five—openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism—has become influential due to its reliability and cross-cultural validation. Other models include psychodynamic theories emphasizing unconscious drives, humanistic theories focusing on self-actualization, and social-cognitive theories stressing learning, expectations, and self-regulation. Biological approaches acknowledge genetic influences and temperament as precursors to personality.

Measurement typically relies on self-report questionnaires and observer ratings. Instruments based on the Big Five assess trait levels; projective tests exist but have limited empirical support. Psychometric properties such as reliability, validity, and measurement invariance across cultures are central concerns.

Heritability estimates suggest genetics account for a substantial portion of personality variance, though environment and experience shape development across the life span. Traits tend to stabilize with age, but life events, cultural context, and deliberate efforts can alter expression. Applications span clinical assessment, education, and work settings, contributing to understanding behavior and guiding interventions, while raising concerns about labeling, privacy, and potential misuse.
