Stressing is the act of applying pressure, emphasis, or strain in various contexts. In science and engineering, stress refers to the internal forces per unit area that develop within a material in response to external loads. In everyday language, stressing can also describe mental or emotional strain caused by perceived demands or challenges.

In psychology and health, stress describes a state that arises when perceived demands exceed an individual’s coping resources. In computing and quality testing, stress testing evaluates system performance under peak or extreme conditions to reveal bottlenecks, failures, or reliability issues. It is used in software, hardware, and network contexts to ensure robustness.
