Causes and mechanisms: aging, genetic factors, metabolic disturbances, oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and environmental exposures contribute. Cellular and molecular processes include protein misfolding and aggregation, mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired autophagy, and programmed cell death (apoptosis) or necrosis.
