DefoamingKontrolle, or defoaming control, is the set of practices, equipment, and process controls used to prevent, reduce, or manage foam formation in industrial processes. Foam can disrupt heat transfer, mixing, gas handling, and product quality, and excessive foaming may lead to overflow, contamination, or equipment damage. The term is often used in German-speaking engineering contexts.

Foam arises from surface-active agents, gas entrainment during agitation, high surface area bubbles, and process conditions such as temperature, pH, and shear. In many processes, foam is an unavoidable byproduct, while in others it may be introduced with raw materials or cleaning agents. Effective control seeks to maintain stable liquid levels, safe venting, and consistent product specifications.

Control methods include chemical antifoams (silicone- or hydrocarbon-based), mechanical devices (foam breakers, spargers, baffles, and weirs), and process design elements (adequate degassing, proper vent sizing, and sanitary piping). Measurement and automation use foam sensors (optical or ultrasonic), foam level controllers, and related process variables (airflow, agitation speed). Dosing can be on-off or proportional, sometimes integrated with feedback from level, pressure, or composition sensors.

Applications span fermentation and bioprocessing, dairy and beverage production, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and wastewater treatment. Key considerations include compatibility with product quality, downstream processing, and environmental impact of antifoams; monitoring to avoid over-dosing; and maintenance to prevent fouling or residual contamination.
