Technically, a DVD-18 contains two data layers on each side of the disc, accessible from the respective reading surface. To access content on the opposite side, the disc must be physically flipped. Reading requires compatible hardware that supports dual-layer, dual-sided DVD-Video content; not all early or budget players could read DVD-18 discs, and success often depends on the specific player model.

In practice, DVD-18 has seen limited use compared to single-sided formats such as DVD-5 and DVD-9, or multihub formats like DVD-10 and DVD-14. The format has been supported by some players and drives, but its popularity declined with the rise of Blu-ray and streaming technologies.
