DVD10

DVD10 refers to a specific type of dual-layer DVD-Video disc. Unlike standard single-layer DVDs that have one data layer, DVD10 discs feature two data layers on each side of the disc. This allows for a significantly increased storage capacity compared to single-layer DVDs. A single-sided DVD10 disc can hold approximately 8.5 gigabytes of data, whereas a standard single-layer DVD can only hold about 4.7 gigabytes.

The dual-layer technology is achieved by placing a second, semi-transparent recording layer above the first. A laser with a different focal length is used to read from either layer. This increased capacity is particularly useful for storing longer films or content with higher video and audio quality that would otherwise require multiple discs.

DVD10 discs are also known as DVD-9. The naming convention DVD10 arose from an earlier designation where DVD-5 indicated a single-sided, single-layer disc, and DVD-10 indicated a double-sided, single-layer disc. However, as dual-layer technology became more common, the designation DVD-9 became the standard for single-sided, dual-layer discs, while double-sided dual-layer discs are less common and are sometimes referred to as DVD-18. The playback compatibility for DVD10 (DVD-9) discs is widespread, with most DVD players manufactured since the early 2000s being capable of reading them.
