A forum is a place for open discussion and exchange of ideas among a community. The term comes from the Latin forum, a public square in ancient Rome where citizens gathered to debate laws, markets, and public matters.

Historically, forums were physical spaces in cities that served civic, commercial, and social functions. In many cultures, similar public spaces or assemblies existed. With the rise of print and, later, digital media, the word has broadened to include any organized setting for moderated discussion.

In online environments, a forum is a website or section of a site that hosts discussions organized into categories or threads. Users create topics, post messages, reply, quote others, and engage in long-form conversations. Most forums require accounts and may have moderators and administrators to enforce rules and maintain order.

Typical features include categories or boards, threads, posts, search, user profiles, private messaging, and notification options. Moderation enforces guidelines, with reminders, warnings, suspensions, and bans as possible sanctions. Guidelines address topics, harassment, copyright, and reliability.

Forums cover general-interest, hobby, professional, technical, or support topics. They provide knowledge sharing, peer support, and archival discussions, often complementing social networks. Challenges include misinformation and abuse, which governance, clear policies, and community norms aim to mitigate.
