Cybercrime refers to criminal activities carried out using computers, networks, or digital devices. It includes offenses against individuals, organizations, and governments, often crossing borders. Common forms include hacking into systems, installing malware such as ransomware or spyware, phishing and social engineering to obtain credentials, identity theft, online fraud and financial theft, distribution of illegal content, cyberstalking, and intellectual property theft and copyright infringement, as well as cyberespionage and DDoS attacks.

Motivations range from financial gain to political or ideological motives, state-sponsored espionage, and notoriety. Criminal networks may use botnets, commodity malware, and crypto-enabled transactions to launder proceeds. The line between cybercrime and other online harms can blur with scams and misinformation.

Impacts are broad: financial losses for individuals and businesses, disruption to services, reputational damage, privacy violations, and potential safety risks. Critical infrastructure sectors face particular risk, including energy, finance, and healthcare. The global cost is substantial and growing.

Enforcement and law: many countries criminalize unauthorized access, fraud, and data theft; international cooperation is essential. The Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and regional laws guide enforcement, evidence collection, and cross-border cooperation. Cybercrime units, digital forensics labs, and international collaboration address investigations and extradition.

Prevention and response: best practices include strong authentication, regular software updates, network segmentation, backups, incident response planning, and employee awareness training. When breaches occur, prompt containment, eradication, recovery, and notification to affected parties and regulators are key. Reporting to law enforcement enables investigation and deterrence.
