Cultureclarifying is a term used to describe practices that aim to make explicit the cultural assumptions, norms, and values that shape how people think, communicate, and act within groups, organizations, or societies. It involves surfacing tacit beliefs and translating them into explicit, shareable understandings to reduce miscommunication and align expectations across diverse participants.

The concept draws on intercultural communication, organizational development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion work. While not uniformly defined, cultureclarifying centers on identifying implicit cultural patterns, articulating their effects on behavior, and creating spaces where people can reflect on and negotiate those patterns collaboratively.

Core principles include transparency, reflexivity, respect for context, and ongoing practice. Methods commonly used are structured dialogues, cultural inventories or norms mapping, scenario analysis, and facilitated feedback loops. Techniques such as guided interviews, ethnographic observation, journaling, and debrief sessions may help participants articulate assumptions and misconceptions. The goal is to build a shared, actionable understanding rather than to label cultures as monolithic.

Applications of cultureclarifying occur in workplaces with diverse teams, in educational settings addressing cultural bias, and in community or policy contexts where unequal power dynamics influence communication.
