Essentializing is the practice of attributing fixed, inherent properties to a group, category, or thing and treating those properties as universal or defining for all its members. It involves reducing diversity and variation to an essential set of traits, often overlooking context, history, or individual differences.

In social analysis, essentializing frequently appears in discussions of race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, religion, or culture. It leads to stereotypes and outgroup homogenization, where complex identities are portrayed as monolithic. For example, statements that imply all members of a group share the same beliefs, abilities, or preferences illustrate essentializing thinking, as do claims that a culture has an unchangeable essence.

The consequences can include prejudice, discrimination, and policy effects that fail to account for within-group variation. Essentializing can obscure power dynamics, historical processes, and intersectional factors that shape individual experiences. Critics argue that essentializing simplifies reality and can legitimize unequal treatment by presenting differences as natural or immutable.
