Consensusbuilding is a collaborative approach to decision making in which participants work toward an outcome that all can support or live with. It emphasizes inclusive participation, mutual understanding, and shared ownership, rather than voting by majority. While its exact meaning varies by context, it generally implies that dissenting views are acknowledged and a common frame of reference is created.

The process often involves a skilled facilitator who guides structured dialogue, helps articulate interests, identifies underlying concerns, and builds options that address multiple stakeholders. Typical stages include defining the issue, mapping interests, generating and evaluating options, testing for consent, and implementing with monitoring and feedback. Techniques include deliberative forums, mediation, collaborative governance, and, in some cases, participatory budgeting or citizen assemblies.

Consensusbuilding is used in organizations to improve buy-in and reduce post-decision resistance, in communities to resolve conflicts or plan development, and in public policy to enhance legitimacy and durability of policy choices. It relies on mechanisms such as ground rules, transparent criteria, equal voice, and time for reflection. It may also employ formal or informal agreements that tolerate some level of dissent or require broad support rather than unanimous consent.

Strengths include legitimacy, commitment to implementation, and durable solutions that reflect diverse interests. Limitations include potential delays, inefficiency in urgent situations, risk of superficial agreement, and vulnerability to power imbalances or coercive negotiation.
