Common settings include meetings, workshops, training sessions, public forums, and online collaboration spaces. Types include meeting facilitators (for corporate or committee meetings), process facilitators (for large-scale or complex changes), dialogue facilitators (for sensitive conversations), and community facilitators (for civic engagement). A facilitator may also aid in resolving conflicts but remains distinct from a mediator who settles disputes.

Key skills include active listening, asking open-ended questions, paraphrasing, note-taking, time management, and conflict management. They design and adapt activities such as brainstorming, round-robin sharing, small-group work, and structured consensus-building. Tools used include agendas, ground rules, check-ins, affinity diagrams, and various decision-making methods (consensus, majority vote). Neutrality, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to manage power dynamics are important, especially in diverse or online settings.
